The nursery and related activities cover 120ha on the fertile Waimea Plains of Nelson. The company was established in 1971 by Doug and Georgina Simpson. Doug, his father and brothers had all operated nurseries and orchards including Golden Bay Nurseries, Simpson Bros, CH Simpson Nurseries and Stafford Lane Estate. Given the family history my choice of vocation was no surprise. After studying at Lincoln University I joined the company in 1980 and currently fill the role of Managing Director. Waimea Nurseries has built a reputation as New Zealand's leading pipfruit nursery based on quality, trust and innovation. Our current annual production is 900,000 rootstocks and 600,000 finished trees. We are proud to represent some of world's leading variety owners, breeders and agencies in the pipfruit, stonefruit, feijoa and olive industries. We are the sole New Zealand member of INN (International New-Varieties Network). This is a global alliance of the world's best new variety developers in pipfruit and stonefruit. These valued relationships and our continual search for the best cultivars ensures we are at the forefront of global variety and rootstock development for New Zealand's professional fruitgrowers. The propagation and growing service provided by Waimea Nurseries uses the best techniques and the end result is top quality trees from the best genetic selections available. Waimea Nurseries is also a leading producer for fruit, nut, berry and ornamental trees for the consumer market in New Zealand. These products are distributed through garden centres/nurseries, chain stores and landscapers nationwide. Every item has been specially selected to fill a particular niche.
